Pizza A Modo Mio

Growing up in a family of Italian cooks, Michael Pitera first learned “hard work, how to sweep, clean, prep, and properly use a knife” working in a friend’s pizzeria. Even while pursuing a career outside of foodservice, Michael was always happiest making pizza.

After Covid-19 disrupted his 15-year sales career, Michael reclaimed his pizza roots by building a pizza trailer and then a brick-and-mortar location. Within the last three years, he’s opened a second successful restaurant and is considering a third.

Besides insisting on ultra-premium ingredients, steadily pursuing community outreach has helped Michael more rapidly attract new repeat customers.

1. Weekly school fundraisers: To incent neighborhood families to come try his food at full price, Michael donates $3/pie on Mondays to the nearest grade school. Unlike discounts which would devalue his quality in customer eyes, his ongoing donations demonstrate his community commitment. To network with school staff, he personally delivers the weekly checks. Appreciating Michael’s generosity, the schools regularly remind students to participate. Best of all, many newcomers have returned as “rest of the week” regulars!

2.Meatball Eating Contest: During summer, Michael supports a local children’s hospital burn unit by hosting a craft market in his parking lot. On a Saturday, he invites local vendors to pitch their tents and display their wares. To guarantee news coverage, Michael added a high-energy Coney Island-style “Meatball Eating Contest” as the finale. Booth and contestant fees raise several thousand dollars for charity!

3. Santa Meet and Greet: Throughout December, Michael’s two restaurants collect Toys for Tots donations. Kids can also “mail” letters to Santa in a big red mailbox. Then, following a “Santa Meet & Greet Dinner,” St. Nick reads “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and poses for pics!

Beyond consistently great food, steady neighborhood outreach has helped Michael boost sales and deepen his community roots!
